Maliniak's claims summer hoop title

PLATTSBURGH — T. Maliniak Masonry, the fourth seed, outlasted top-seed CSEA Local 884 in the semifinals and then went on to defeat Peabody's/Cornerstone Drug & Gift 80-57 Thursday in the championship game of the City of Plattsburgh Summer Men's Basketball Playoffs.

Mike Medberry scored 26 points and Chris Castine chipped in with 10 lead Maliniak's to the title victory. Jerrod Dumont netted 17 points and Jason LaPlante, 16, for Peabody's/Cornerstone while Eli Franze tallied 10 points.

Jamie Moore hit for 28 points in Maliniak's 90-80 semifinal win over CSEA. Chris Hartmann tossed in 19 and Medberry, 12. Anthony Williams led CSEA with 23 points, followed by Errol Daniyan, 18, and Travis Gorham, 14.

Peabody's, seeded third, also pulled off an upset, edging No. 2 Fourth Ward 36ers 74-72 in the other semifinal. Jerrod Dumont exploded for 35 points and Jason LaPlante added 25 to lead Peaody's/Cornerstone. Steve Thomas led Fourth Ward with 24 while Tory Bouyea and Craig Bujold each dropped in 19.

Jerrod Dumont of Peabody's/Cornerstone was named the league's most valuable player while the following players earned all-star recognition:

4th Ward 36er's — Steve Thomas, Tory Bouyea

Celtics — Terry Franks, Chris Strack

Chase's Mountain Men — Matt Farbotko, Matt Williams

CSEA Local 884 — Carl Munnerlyn, Travis Gorham

K. Williams Team — Anthony Hodge, Cody Kirlew

Kneucraft — Steve Carder, Dustin Gratto

Peabody's/Cornerstone Drug & Gift — Jerrod Dumont, Jason LaPlante

Courtney Coryea MVP of women's league

PLATTSBURGH — Courtney Coryea, who led American Legion Post 912 to the championship, has been named Most Valuable Player of the City of Plattsburgh Open Women's Basketball League.

Her sister, Rachel, joined her on the all-star team.
